HVAC — heating and heat pumps
Britain is replacing gas boilers with heat pumps in millions of homes, and it does not have the installers to do it. This programme teaches the wet-heating trade underneath a heat pump, and the heat pump on top of it, to UK practice.
Who this is for
For engineers and tradespeople who want a skill the UK is short of.
Engineering graduates — electrical and electronic, mechanical or civil — who want a practical trade.
Or tradespeople with real plumbing or heating experience.
English good enough to start learning in. We assess it first and teach it every day.
What you learn
A heat pump engineer is a heating engineer first.
Most of the job is pipework, and pipework is learned by doing it hundreds of times. An electrical engineering education gives you a real head start on the rest.
Pipework
Copper and press-fit joints, made and pressure-tested again and again until every one holds. The foundation everything else sits on.
Wet heating systems
Radiators, cylinders, pumps and valves, installed and balanced to UK practice.
Heat pump principles
How an air-source heat pump works, and why it needs a system designed for low temperatures.
Installation on working units
Installing, commissioning and fault-finding on heat pump training rigs in our workshop.
Electrics and controls
Wiring, controls and commissioning — where an electrical engineering degree shows.
English and UK site conduct
The language of the job, safety, and how a UK installation is run day to day.
The gates
What stands between training and work.
| Step | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| A documented record of real work | Photographs and records of the systems you have built and tested | Sylhet |
| English for the UK visa | An approved English test at the level the visa requires | Sylhet or Dhaka |
| UK heating certificates | Water regulations, unvented hot water and the heat pump award | United Kingdom |
- A documented record of real work
- Photographs and records of the systems you have built and tested
- Sylhet
- English for the UK visa
- An approved English test at the level the visa requires
- Sylhet or Dhaka
- UK heating certificates
- Water regulations, unvented hot water and the heat pump award
- United Kingdom
The heat pump certificate is an upgrade you earn in the UK, not a ticket you need to arrive. What makes you employable is proof that you can do the work — hundreds of hours of real pipework, documented.
After your training
How the UK route works.
Work in the UK on the Skilled Worker route needs a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence, a job offer from that employer, and pay at or above the level the UK government sets for the job. Your employer applies to sponsor you; you apply for your visa.
BTI does not sponsor, recruit or arrange visas. We prepare you to a standard UK employers recognise, and support you with the steps that follow.
